This film is set during world war 2 as the Nazi'sinvade france and everthing is going to hell but within all this two boys a french catholic boy named julien quintin (played by gaspard mmanesse) and a jewish boy named jean bonnet (played by raphael fejito) which is based on the director louis malle's. but even though the boys are enimmes they soon find a common ground, especially when it is to deal with the tyranny of Nazis.the title of the film means goodbye children and it is french (big shocker I know).
anyway julien is a boy who is a wanna be tough guy but is a real mother boy who he is pamperd by and he even still wets the bed even at the age of what seems 12/13 years old
while at the school the headmaster introduces 3 new boys one of which being jean. jean is the same age as julien but he is socially awarkward and good at arthimatic and adapt at playing the piano.
Because of the fact the boy is jewish he is now seen as a social outcast a beacon of deastuction if you like. as were jews are during that time period nazi's are sure to come running.
The film deals with problems such as dealing with your own problems having a different facade and how you want the world to see you. dealing with bullying because of race or religon (but in the film understand able for the context) but also has themes of a realism that not many of us was alive to see but this is why storys like theses are the best because we suddenly have that window into what happend not what could happen through a creative mind no we see a world that has gone and laid rest but with it sprouted new life into the next and that is always nice to see.
this film has decent acting the realtionship between the boys is a little lack luster as i have never seen two boys meet/ act this way but then again i wasnt even an idea at that time. so id say check this out but only if you can get invested in the story as it is slow in places especially the beginning but is a good one if you can follow it
